How to find a niche for your website or blog
First we need to brainstorm website content ideas to come up with some niche content that you are interested in or already know about. This can be any idea from hobbies or interests to job or everyday tasks. Write all of these down on a piece of paper or in a document on your computer using open office, microsoft office
This is usually the step in starting an online affiliate business that stumbles most business owners. You do not need to think of products to sell, this is the worse way you can be thinking. Think of the product uses instead, like hobbies! Don't think "I want to sell digital cameras", your internet business most likely will fail online. This is also the mistake I see almost every internet business make. The reason you don't want to think of what products to sell online is because this is not website content, it's product or ads. It will take you a very long time to even get noticed in any of the organic search results on the search engines because of the competition. Now think "I want to make a helpful informative website on photography", now you have yourself some content! This isn't niche content though, so you will probably want to go a little more specific. So what are we thinking now? "I want to build a helpful informative website about photo editing using Adobe Photoshop CS4" or maybe "I want to create a helpful informative website on macro photography". Now you have yourself a good niche specific website idea! You can go as broad of an idea as you like, or as specific, but I do see more business websites become more sucessful building a website on specific content.
Some people always think "my website content won't make me money online", you're right, if you think this way it won't. We still need to do some research on your content ideas to see which one will be easier for you to do and make more money online. So now after you have all of your ideas written or typed out, which one do you know the most about, which one are you mostly interested in personally? Choose that one, and if asked why you are building a website based on this content and your answer is "because it makes money" or "because it's popular", then sorry your online business will probably fail. You need to know about the content you are building a website on because you will have to write about this content. If you don't know about the website's content you will at least want to be interested in it personally so when you have to research this website content you will enjoy reading and researching for yourself. If you do not find your website content interesting you will not enjoy reading and research your content and most likely give up or think it's too hard and again your internet business will fail.
Some questions you should write down and answer:
- What are my hobbies?
- What do I enjoy doing?
- What do I have experience doing?
You enjoy cooking? Great, build a cooking website helping others cook, giving them recipes, selling recipes, teaching them how to cook, what cooking products to use and not to use, share your knowlegde with them. Enjoy cooking but don't know anything about it? Great, research it as you build your website as there are many websites you can gather research information from.
You like partying? Doesn't everyone? Build a party website on hosting parties. How to decorate for a party, where to get party decorations, how to organize a party, where and how to make or get party invitations, and anything else related to parties you can think of. Want to make this more specific? Try baby showers, birthday parties, bachelorette parties, bachelor parties, and any other parties you can think of.
Don't think these website content examples are good website content ideas? There are millions of people that search online for almost anything and everything, the internet isn't called the information highway for nothing. So yes, there are great website content ideas.
Here are a few research tools that may help you figure out some ideas to do your website on:
- Google Products - This tool you can see what the most recent products people have been searching for. They are listed right below the search box, you don't have to type anything in the search, unless you want to search more specific.
- Meta Spy - This research tool will allow you to see what the most recent searches done on their website, so you can see in real time what people are searchin for. This is the "unfiltered" section, so you will see some sexual related searches appear as well. If you want the "filtered" version in the browser window you will see http://www.metaspy.com/info.metac.spy/metaspy/unfiltered.htm you can change this to http://www.metaspy.com/info.metac.spy/metaspy/filtered.htm or just click on this one and it will take you to the filtered version.
- Google Zeitgeist - This link will give you all of Google's trends research tools to see product trends.
- Trend Watching - This is another trend research tool, that will tell you all about trends on the internet.
