In this section I will guide you through Google AdSense. I will show you how to setup Google AdSense, how to create and install Google AdSense ad unit javascript code, how to create and install Google AdSense link unit javascript code, and how to create and install Google AdSense referral ads javascript code. I will also guide you through setting up your Google AdSense ad's colors to blend in with your website. This guide will cover Google AdSense placement, so you know where to place your Google AdSense ads to get the maximum amount of clicks. This guide will also show you which sizes of Google AdSense ads to use to increase your Google AdSense click through rate.
Google AdSense provides relevant ads on your website or blog that are pay per click, so if anyone clicks on these Google AdSense ads you get paid. A lot of people ask me how this system works and why Google AdSense pays you everytime some clicks these ads. Basically people that are running paid advertising signup for Google AdWords where they pay people to come to their website or blog. Now Google will take their ad place on throughout Google's entire network, search engines, partners, and Google AdSense. So now you place Google AdSense on your website or blog and AdSense scans your pages to see what your website or blog's content is, then it will look in it's AdWords database to see who is paying for ads that relate to your website's content, now it will place these ads on your website for you. Now when someone clicks this AdSense ads you get paid, and the company paying for that ad is charged.
NOTE: any time you change colors save the Color Palette for ease of use next time. Also if you are wanting to manually place any of these ads in your wordpress blog posts/pages instead of using the wordpress adsense plugin, you can edit the post/page as normal, but when you go to paste the adsense code in the post or page, make sure you click on "html" first, then paste, then click "visual". Ad units can take up to 10 minutes until they start being displayed on your website or blog.
This will ask for basic information, if you are an individual or company, name, address, website address, etc. Google AdSense will not ask for your tax information until you have made at least $10 to prevent people from signing up for an account and then never using it.
Google will now check out your website to see if it is active and make sure there is no pornography on it. Usually takes about 48 hours for them to approve you.
After you are approved, Google AdSense will email you letting you know your account is approved.
Add AdSense on your website or blog, you can follow any of the steps below, each one are different methods to use Google AdSense. If you are using WordPress blog, most of you will choose to setup your Google AdSense plugin and it does the rest for you, then maybe just do some tweaks here and there.
Setup Google AdSense WordPress plugin (Only if you are using WordPress Blog on your own webhost):
Scroll all the way to the bottom, you will see a section called "Property Information" in this section there is a code that looks like this: ca-pub-1234567890123456
We need to copy just the numbers, you do not need the ca-pub- part. Highlight the numbers by clicking and dragging over top of them, right click on these numbers and click "Copy". This copies these numbers to an invisable clipboard on your computer.
Now go to your WordPress blog, login, and make sure the AdSense plugin is installed and activated. If I installed your blog and plugins this Google AdSense plugin is installed and activated already, you just need to set it up.
Click on "Settings" at the top right of your admin area, this will bring up a submenu and most likely open "General" by default.
Click on "AdSense" in the submenu, this will bring up the AdSense plugin's settings.
Now scroll down slightly past the instructions, and the first box should ask for "Adsense ID (Numbers Only)" right click in this box and go to "Paste". You should now see your ID number here, make sure you copied and pasted it all.
Scroll down a little more and you will see "Ad Type (image, Text or Both)", select whichever you prefer, but I'd say Text and Image
Next we want to change ad format, this is the size of the ads, I suggest using the last 2 listed, 336x280 and 468x60 if you are going to have them placed in the center.
Use smaller ones like 200x200, 180x150, and 125x125 if you want them aligned to the left.
Now we need to blend in the colors to match your content, these colors use hexidecimal color codes. You can either click the "Google Ad Color Picker" and select your colors you want to use, you can also look in your style.css file to see what colors you blog is using, or you can use an image manipulation program like Adobe Photoshop CS3 or Gimp to take a screen shot of your blog and then use the "Eye Dropper" to see what color everything is.
Color Border and Color Background should be set as your blogs background color. If using style.css go to "Design" then "Theme Editor" then "Stylesheet (style.css)" and look for "background:#ffffff;" which ffffff is white, these 6 hexidecimal charactors will be different on everyones blog.
Color Link we want to make the same color as your current links on your theme, again in the style.css look for:
a {
color:#0000ff;
}
which is blue, but again yours will be different, where a is there maybe a a:link a:hover a:active as well.
Color Text and Color URL you can make the same and will be the same text color that you already have on your blog. found most likely as:
.post {
color:#000000;
}
which is black, there will be other things on here as well like font: padding: align etc not just color:
Ads per Post and Ads per Page depend, if you want to place one of these ad units on your sidebar you want these both set as 2, if you don't want one on your sidebar select 3 for both. You can only have 3 of this type of ad (Ad Unit) on each page, no more. You can have 3 ad units (which is what these are), 3 Link Units (which look like a menu), 3 referral units, and 2 search units. So you can still place these other ad types on your sidebar.
Ad Positioning: If you are using smaller ads, use left, if you are using the larger size use center.
Click "save" button on either top right or bottom right, you are done setting up your wordpress adsense plugin. Now if you want to add other types of Google AdSense ads on your sidebar or in your posts, follow the other guides listed below.
Setup Google AdSense Ad Units JavaScript Ad Code:
Only used on a website (up to 3 per page) or if you are using a WordPress blog you can have 1 on your sidebar if you chose 2 ads per page/post on the adsense plugin skip to step 19, for website body content follow the steps in order, for website top/header skip to step 15.
Login to your Google AdSense account, click on "AdSense Setup". This will default you to "Get Ads" submenu.
Here you want to choose "AdSense for Content", which will now ask you "Ad Unit" or "Link Unit", but instead of selecting one of these, at the top of the page click on "Single Page" instead of "Wizard" this will have all of the options for this ad unit on a single page instead of having to click "Next" or "Continue" a bunch of times.
Select "Ad Unit" and select "text and image" for body of your site usually place 2 of these in content.
Now for Ad Format we want to use the square ads, if you want your content wrapped around this ad use a smaller square 200x200, 180x150, or 125x125, if you want them above, below, or separating paragraphs use large square 336x280
Now for colors, we want them to blend in, so for background and border make this the same as your websites background.
Title make the same as your links.
Text and URL make the same as your contents text.
Set corner style to square corners.
Now for channels, this is to track which ad unit is making money, you make a channel called "body" and then when you look at your reports you will see you stats on just this "body" ad unit.
Click "Add new Channel" just below the channel box, enter the channels name and click "ok", you can place this add in multiple channels if you like, which is good if you have multiple websites, you can create another channel called say 247coach so now any ads you place on 247coach website you can bring up in your reports to see each website separately.
AdSense Unit Name, I usually just leave this as is, this is just a name of the ad so if you want to come back in here later and edit the colors or some other setting you will look for this name.
Click "Submit and Get Code" now you will see your JavaScript ad code here, right click "Select All", right click "Copy", now right click and "paste" it in your website where you want this ad to appear, if you need help with this see my section on web design.
You can paste this same code on all of your pages where you want it to appear. You place this code on your website just as you would any other html code.
Adding AdSense Unit to top/header of site
Click on "Adsense Setup" , "AdSense for Content", "Single Page" if you are not already there.
Select "Ad Unit" and "Image Ads Only", use either 728x90 banner or 468x60, depending how wide your website is, you can click on "ad formats" to see samples.
Follow from Step 6, and on channels when following those steps use "top" or "header" for this one.
Creating vertical ad for WordPress blog sidebar
Click on "Adsense Setup" , "AdSense for Content", "Single Page" if you are not already there.
Select "Ad Unit" and either "text and image" or "image ads only" depending on what you would like on your sidebar, for this I'd suggest "images ads only", this is not for making this look like a menu, that will be "Link units" explained in next section
For ad format select either 160x600 or 120x600 depending on how wide your sidebar is. 160 wide shouldn't be a problem, most wordpress themes use 180+.
Follow steps 6-13, for channel use "menu" or "sidebar", for pasting we are going to paste this on your sidebar as a text widget, to do this login to your wordpress blog.
Click "Design" then click "Widgets", and now you will see your current widgets on your sidebar, if there are none, your blog is showing default.
If you are showing none, ad the widgets that are showing already on your blog, like search, recent posts, categories, etc., just click "add" next to each widget, and you will see it add on the sidebar.
Now that you added those widgets to your sidebar, or if they were already there, we need to add a "text widget" to place this ad in. Click "Add" on the text widget and you will see it move to your sidebar.
Now click and drag this text widget to where you want it to be shown, you can place it below everything else, or maybe towards the top, middle, etc, where ever you want, I suggest after your categories. In order I usually have them setup Search, Quick Subscribe, recent posts, Text (adsense link unit), categories, Text (adsense ad unit, this one), pages, other ads, meta.
Click edit on this text widget, you will see a box open with 2 empty boxes, leave top small box empty, right click and paste this code in the big box, click "change", the box should close, now click "save changes" at the bottom. DONE
Setup Google AdSense Link Units JavaScript Ad Code:
These ads I usually place this type of ad around my website navigation menus and blend them in. On WordPress blog I place them on my sidebar usually above or below recent posts, or above categories. You are limited to 3 of these units per page.
Login to Google AdSense, Click "AdSense Setup", Click "AdSense for Content", Click "Single Page", Select "Link Unit"
For Ad Format you want to select one of the "Square" type if you are placing on left or right navigation, or wordpress sidebar 200x90 or 180x90, for a website, you should know how wide your side navigation is, if not, click "ad formats" and compare.
If your website has top navigation, you want to select a vertical size as wide as you can.
If your sidebar or website navigation is pretty small text select 5 links per unit, if you are using larger font, select 4 links per unit, most will select 4
Now for colors, make Background and Border same as your background color, and make Links the same color as your links.
Scroll down to channel section, if you already have a channel called "menu" or "sidebar" click "add" next to it, if not, click "add new channel" and call it "menu" or "sidebar"
Leave ad name the same unless you want to change it
Click "Submit and get code", now in the code box right click "select all", right click "copy", and go to your website right click "paste"
For wordpress blog sidebar, login to your blog, click "design", click "widgets", click "add" on a text widget, you will see the text widget show up on right side, click "edit".
right click "paste" in the lower big box, click "change", then click "save changes", done, I'd move this text widget above or below "recent posts" or above "categories", then click "save changes"
Verify all of your Google Ads are appearing on your website or blog, done.
To edit these ads after you have already created them, like changing colors, login to adsense, click "AdSense Setup, click "manage ads", on the right side you can click "edit settings »", if you want to use this same unit on another area of your website or blog click "code" to get the code for the ad already created.
