When designing a website you always want to plan your website out first. You also need to know what content your website will have. In webdesign the major part is figuring out your web site layout or website template. What content goes where, where you want your images, ads, navigation, content, etc. You can always design your own website layout, web site theme, or website template. You can also download website layout, templates, or themes online. There are many web sites you can download templates from for free. I don't recommend paying for a template, but this is also an option.
You will also want to figure out what web design software you want to use to create and design your website with. There are many web design software programs available online for free, and there are also some paid for web design programs available. For your web design software I do recommend buying a web design program as there are many out there that just won't do the job correctly or have as many options available to you. One of the best web design software programs is Adobe Dreamweaver CS4. This program is also pretty pricey, but is well worth it. There is no free web design software out there that compares to what Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 web design software
can do for you. There are also a few others that I will cover in my web design tutorials. Also if you know PHP and HTML you can also write out your websites by hand using just a standard text editor.
Time to start building your website, remember to stay consistant with your layout, use easy to read fonts, colors that match, and stay away from flash content! Flash is very good eye candy for your viewers, but designing a website in flash makes your website less seo (Search Engine Optimized). Flash is also very slow and not everyone's web browser supports it, and the viewers that do have supported web browsers may not have flash installed or enabled.
If you are designing your own website template and writing your website out by hand, make sure your website layout is SEO (Search Engine Optimized). Yes, there are a few web design tricks and tips you can do with PHP, HTML, and CSS to actually make your layout itself more search engine friendly. Here are a few tips to make your website template more seo:

- Use php include command to add html code that is the same on every page. Like navigation menus, headers, and footers.
